Lal Bhatia, known for his unwavering fight against injustice and his best-selling book Indicting Goliath, has launched a social initiative aimed at improving menstrual hygiene for young girls in West Bengal. Using proceeds from his book, Bhatia has installed sanitary napkin vending machines in several girls’ schools and colleges across the state, ensuring that students have access to necessary hygiene products.
Menstrual hygiene is a fundamental aspect of women’s health, yet many young girls in West Bengal, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, face challenges in accessing sanitary napkins. This lack of access not only affects their health but also their education, as girls often miss school during their periods due to inadequate menstrual care. Bhatia’s initiative aims to bridge this gap by making sanitary products easily accessible through vending machines placed in schools and colleges.
This project is designed to empower young girls by providing them with the tools they need to manage their menstrual health with dignity. The vending machines offer sanitary napkins at an affordable rate, ensuring that even girls from disadvantaged families can access them when needed.
Bhatia’s dedication to social welfare extends beyond menstrual hygiene. During the recent Durga Puja festival, he and his team distributed thousands of face masks to promote public safety amid the pandemic. Additionally, Bhatia has been involved in food distribution drives, providing essential support to vulnerable families in Kolkata.
His life journey, which includes a 13-year fight against false imprisonment in the United States, has shaped his commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
